burst pipe

When most people think of a burst pipe they think of water gushing out of a huge hole in the side of a pipe. Whilst sometimes this is indeed the case, often a burst pipe can be a lot subtler, causing damage without you necessarily realising until it’s too late.

Things to look out for:

  • Water pressure issues or intermittent water supply to taps.
  • Water damages patches on your walls or ceilings.
  • Damp patches of flooring.
  • Bulges in walls.

Pipes bursting due to the water inside them becoming frozen is very common. As the ice expands within the pipe, it typically has nowhere to go. It finds a way out of the pipe by bursting a hole. Think of a frozen pipe like a balloon inflating. The balloon will only inflate a certain amount before popping at its weakest point. That same process occurs when a frozen pipe bursts.

Due to the potential damage that can be caused from a burst pipe inside your home, it is considered an emergency. A burst pipe is an absolute emergency if the pipe is inside your home. If you are not home when a pipe bursts, water could fill the interior and cause significant damage to your walls and flooring. And once moisture has entered these areas, removal becomes very difficult and could result in mould or mildew. Once this occurs, the health of you and your family is at risk. If you have a burst pipe in your home it is important to call an emergency plumber right away.

A broken pipe outside the house may also be critically important if the broken pipe in question supplies all the water to your home. A breakage could mean you may not receive sufficient water to maintain proper hygiene, or even that your water source could become contaminated by substances entering the water system through the breakage point.

A good way to prevent pipes from freezing, is to provide them with sufficient insulation. Insulated pipes are widely used for district heating and hot water supply in the UK. They consist of a steel pipe, an insulating layer, and an outer casing. The main purpose of these pipes is to maintain the temperature of the fluid in the pipes. This means that your system will run at the same level of efficiency constantly.

If your existing system pipes are not currently insulated, and suffer from freezing, then you may want to look into insulating them. Alternatively, you can replace your system and it’s pipes with insulated ones.

Finding water pouring out of a pipe can be an alarming and stressful ordeal. It’s often difficult to work out what point of action you should take first. If you are able to, the best thing to do is turn off your water by the stop cock. This would usually be located in your kitchen. Sometimes a screwdriver will be required, but more often than not it can just be turned like a tap. If you can’t find your stop cock, or it becomes stuck you should call us immediately so we can help and prevent damage being caused to your home.If the flood is located in the tank in your loft or an upstairs room, unfortunately turning off the water supply will not immediately stop the flood. The water will continue to leak until your tank is empty and you’ll need to call an emergency plumber. If you can turn the stop cock, this will prevent the boiler from refilling.
